Reptile Starter Kits

Reptile and Lizard Starter Kits

Depending on the manufacturer you may find up to four different reptile and lizard starter kits on the market. Exo Terra is one manufacturer of reptile housing that offers four different kits. We will explain the different kits to help you understand what option you might want to purchase for your reptile or lizard.

The desert reptile and lizard starter kits are meant for desert dwellers. They are a good way to get the necessary items you need for proper care and housing for your pet reptile. The starter kits from Exo Terra offer you a full glass terrarium designed by European herpetologists. The terrarium has front opening doors to allow for feeding and easy maintenance. The top of the full glass terrarium is mesh. This mesh offers better ventilation and allows UVB and UVA wavelengths to get to your reptile.

The starter kit will come with a compact lighting system without fluorescent bulb. The bulb is not included because you will need to find the right wattage for the lizard or reptile you have. Each reptile has its own lighting and temperature needs. For example some snakes require less wattage than others. Included in the kit are a care guide, rock terrarium background, decoration items, substrate, water dish, rock outcrop, plant, and hiding cave. These options fit the desert reptile better as they do not tend to climb, but bask in the sun. This habitat comes in a small or medium size. The medium kit is better for lizards, geckos, and frogs. The small habitat can work for a few lizards.

The desert starter kit has a wider tank than it is tall. Your second choice in reptile and lizard starter kits is the rainforest kit. This kit offers a taller terrarium than wide one. This is due to the arboreal species which will inhabit it. The differences in this kit are the decoration items. You will receive the rock background, care guide for arboreal species, substrate for jungle, water dish, jungle vines, and jungle plants. Again the medium tank is better for most lizards.

The Maya starter kit from Exo Terra is a third option. It is still a rainforest kit with the necessary rainforest decoration items, but it is for specific reptiles like geckos, lizards, snakes, and frogs that are found in the Mayan rainforest as opposed to other rainforests around the world. Small species fit better in this habitat kit.

Your last option of reptile and lizard vivarium starter kits is the invertebrate kit. The invertebrate kit has the same style ventilation and glass terrarium. The difference is in the accessories. It includes insect water dish, jungle plant, reptile cave and thermometer and hygrometer. Invertebrate species require humidity, thus the hygrometer is included to make sure you have the right level of humidity. This starter kit is best for arachnids, scorpions, millipedes, centipedes, praying mantises, stick insects, beetles, and other insects. However, it can also be used for certain lizards. The tank is 12x12x12 inches, making it one of the smallest on the market.
